Deaf Rights Are Human Rights: KNDWPN Celebrates Deaf Awareness Month
KNDWPN celebrates Deaf Awareness Month, championing the rights, inclusion, and leadership of Deaf women and girls. Deaf rights are human rights.
The Kenya National Deaf Women Peace Network (KNDWPN) joins the global community in celebrating Deaf Awareness Month, reaffirming its commitment to promoting the rights, dignity, leadership, and inclusion of Deaf women and girls.
Deaf Awareness Month provides an important opportunity to recognise the contributions of Deaf people, challenge discrimination, and raise awareness of the barriers that continue to prevent Deaf women and girls from fully participating in society.
Advancing the Rights of Deaf Women and Girls
Deaf women and girls often face multiple barriers related to gender, disability, communication, and access to essential services. These barriers can limit their access to education, healthcare, employment, justice, leadership opportunities, and protection from gender-based violence.
Access to information and communication in Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) is essential to ensuring that Deaf women and girls can understand their rights, make informed decisions, and participate meaningfully in matters affecting their lives.
KNDWPN continues to emphasise that inclusion must go beyond awareness. Institutions, service providers, communities, and decision-makers must take practical steps to remove communication barriers, strengthen accessibility, and ensure that Deaf women and girls are included in decision-making processes.
From Awareness to Action
Promoting Deaf rights requires more than celebrating achievements or acknowledging challenges. It requires sustained action to address discrimination, improve access to services, and create equal opportunities for Deaf women and girls.
This includes promoting accessible healthcare and education, strengthening protection against gender-based violence, expanding economic opportunities, and ensuring that Deaf women participate in leadership and peacebuilding initiatives.
Deaf women and girls must be recognised not only as individuals who need support, but also as leaders, advocates, decision-makers, and agents of change in their communities.
Nothing About Deaf Women Without Deaf Women
Meaningful inclusion requires the active participation of Deaf women and girls in the decisions, policies, and programmes that affect them. Their lived experiences, knowledge, and leadership must inform the development and implementation of solutions to the challenges they face.
KNDWPN calls on government institutions, civil society organisations, development partners, and communities to strengthen their commitment to disability inclusion, accessible communication, gender equality, and the protection of Deaf women's and girls' rights.
As we celebrate Deaf Awareness Month, the message remains clear:
Deaf rights are human rights. Inclusion is not a favour—it is a right.
Deaf rights are human rights. Inclusion is not a favour—it is a right.
Together, let us move from awareness to action and build a society where Deaf women and girls are respected, represented, protected, and empowered.
